A Turkish fitness influencer says she was banned from an American Airlines flight because her outfit was “too revealing.”

On July 8, Deniz Saypinar says she was stopped by an airlines employee while attempting to board a flight from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Miami, where she was supposed to model for Miami Swim Week.

“They literally didn’t take me to the plane because they say ‘you’re naked and you offend other families,'” the 26-year-old tearfully told her more than 1 million followers in a series of now deleted Instagram stories.

According to The Independent, Saypinar’s Instagram story indicated that she had been wearing a sports bra and denim shorts with a white sweater tied around her waist upon her arrival at the airport that day.

Saypinar called the incident “traumatic and offensive,” and added that she had hoped in America she would “experience freedom” from the misogyny she had previously faced in Turkey.

“I am an athlete, and now I have to wait here until the morning. I like to wear feminine clothes that reveal my femininity, but I never dress in a way that will offend anyone,” Saypinar said. “I’m mature and civilized enough to know what I can and cannot wear.”

On Monday, Saypinar shared more stories to Instagram, claiming she had received hate mail after going public with her experience with American Airlines.

“I’m still trying to get over it. Such trauma,” she wrote. “Still feeling maybe I should wear more layers.”

A spokesperson from American Airlines came forward with a statement, confirming that they “denied boarding for a customer” on July 8 while they attempted to board a flight to Miami.
